Duane Nickerson: Illuminating The Wild – Land And Sky

ANNAPOLIS ROYAL, Nova Scotia (March 1, 2025) – ARTSPLACE Gallery is pleased to present Land and Sky, an exhibition of recent works by acclaimed Canadian artist Duane Nickerson. Rooted in the rich tradition of landscape painting, Nickerson’s meticulous oil paintings offer a profound meditation on nature’s resilience and fragility. With striking detail, he captures the intricate textures of tree trunks, roots, and foliage—fragments of the forest that stand as quiet testaments to the delicate balance of life.

At a time when our collective awareness of environmental limits is growing, Land and Sky invites reflection on our relationship with the natural world. Through his work, Nickerson transforms familiar landscapes into contemplative spaces, challenging viewers to look more closely at the beauty and complexity of the natural environment. “The artist’s reverence for the organic structures of the forest is evident in his precise technique and deep engagement with surface and form,” said Sophie Paskins, Gallery Director.

Nickerson’s practice has taken him across the globe, including a seven-year residency in Borneo. His works are held in public and private collections worldwide, spanning Canada, the United States, the UK, France, Korea, Mexico, Singapore, Brunei, and Australia. While oil painting remains his primary medium, he also employs drawing and watercolour to explore composition and develop ideas. His approach to painting, which he describes as “gleaning meaning from the visual topography of my surroundings,” challenges conventional boundaries of representation and technique.

“We are excited to host this compelling exhibition, offering visitors a chance to experience Nickerson’s evocative landscapes firsthand,” said Ted Lind, ARTSPLACE Board Member.
Duane Nickerson’s “Land and Sky” opening reception Sat. March 1, 2025, 12-2 p.m. Light refreshments served, all welcome. Exhibition continues through March 29.
