Archival paper is an excellent medium for completing on-site studies that offer an opportunity to capture the feeling of the encounter with the object under study. En plein air or working outside is a method associated with the 19th century Impressionist artists, but artists have sketched on-site for centuries to gather the visual information required for larger works that were worked up in the more controlled conditions of the studio. Sometimes paper is also the right surface for larger studio works as it accommodates an interesting combination of liquid and dry media.
